Architectural Design I
project 01
Geometry and form
This project is how we integrate our ideas using the basic principles of architecture elements. Through this project, we are able to understand the Primary Elements (point, line, plane, and form) and the Ordering Principles (axis, symmetry, hierarchy, datum, rhythm, and repetition) and use them to convey our design ideas.
project 02
structure and body
This second project is a group project which each group have to make a 1:1 structure based on a specific action we got. Through this project, we are able to understand about the importance of ergonomics, anthropometrics, joinery, and materials, especially about bamboo which was the main material for this project. This structure is put in Kebun Komuniti USJ 2 to be used for the residences especially the elders.
Project 3
sensory and spaces
The final project purpose is to re-interpret our project 2 action and integrate our project 1 elements into a sensorial space based on our own narrative. Using at least 2 of the given materials, which are concrete, glass, timber, and steel, we need to develop that sensorial space based on our five senses. This project 3 is a collaboration between Architecture Design I and Design Communication.
Reflection
Architectural Design I or AD I or Studio I is a module led by Ar. Chang Yan Yee. My respective tutor in Studio I is Ar. Chong Sue May for all of my projects. This module for me is really important because it pushes us to be creative and be confident of our own design. Though it was quite hard to adapt because I know nothing about architecture, meanwhile a lot of my classmates are from foundation. At first, I don't even know how to start. But, as I socialize and look at my classmates works, I now understand better.
During the first project was the hardest time for me. I understand the brief, but I did not understand the lecture as it was very brief and short. So, I had to research on my own which was quite hard to understand. Not only that, in the first tutorial, I was shocked by how everyone had brought their test model already, meanwhile I did not even know what to do. It was mentally tiring. Now as I reflect back on my project, I feel like I could do better in terms of design and workmanship.
The second project or the bamboo project was a fun experience and my favorite project out of all. Even though at first, I did not know anyone in my group and it was quite awkward, but as we work together, we also warm up to each other. During this project, it was more to physical endurance because we had to cut, shape, tie, and built the bamboo structure ourselves. But overall, it was a very interesting experience and that I want to experience it again. I also am grateful that I got such amazing teammates that are cooperative, super fun, and kind.
Our semester ends with our last and final project which cost 60% of our grade. In this last project, I feel better, I take in critics better than the last projects, I am more confident with my design, though I did not sleep better. It was quite chill at first, but as I am approaching the deadline, everything became so rushed, and of course tiring, physically and mentally. I am glad that I am able to finish this project even though I feel insecure seeing all of my classmates works. But I remind myself that I did my best and I'll just hope for the best.
